By talking honestly with your partner, he or she can probably help you feel less stressed about finances, your career and the responsibility of a baby. The best thing your partner can do is listen to your concerns. Your partner probably has concerns too, so set aside some time before you conceive to talk about how you’re feeling.

Talk about who will do what when the baby comes. If your partner is prepared to share the childcare and house cleaning, it will be a lot easier for you when baby arrives. Working out who will go to work and who will be responsible for cleaning the kitchen can save you a lot of headaches later. The more willing your partner is to share the burden, the happier and healthier you’ll be after the birth.

Your partner can take away some of the financial burden by setting up an appointment with a financial advisor. This way, you can figure out investments, loans and debts before you get pregnant. Having a baby is expensive, and the more financially prepared you are, the smoother things will be.

Your partner should also find out about workplace policies on parental leave, time off for doctors appointments, and if health insurance will cover the birth. The more details your partner can tick off the list, the more comfortable your impending pregnancy will be.

Medical history and lifestyle are important – for both you and your partner. Your partner needs to understand that quitting unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking before you get pregnant will mean a better chance at conception, but also a feeling of being supported during a stressful time.

Your partner should come with you to the pre pregnancy planning appointment you make with your doctor. Your physician will ask you a number of questions, and perform a physical exam to rule out any health conditions that could cause problems in a pregnancy.
