Popular Names for Twins

If you discovered that you are having twins, CONGRATULATIONS! You have probably found your way to this page while searching for the perfect names for your little bundles of joy whether you are having boy/boy, girl/girl or boy/girl twins. When deciding on the perfect names, it is helpful to know what others have named their children regardless if you are searching for unique or more common, popular names. It is also interesting to note trends that are evident when viewing the top names for twins in any given year.

Popular Twin Names of 2006-2007

Topping the charts for two consecutive years running are the names Jacob and Joshua with 67 and 69 sets of twins born in the U.S. given these names in 2006 and 2007 respectively. The number 2 position for both 2006 and 2007 were the names Matthew and Michael.

One interesting fact is the number of unisex names in the list of the top 100 twin names. For example, Taylor and Tyler top the charts at number 8 in 2006 and number 7 in 2007. Since the name Taylor could be a name for either a boy or girl, it is difficult to determine if this is indicative of boy/boy twins, boy/girl twins or both. Although it could be speculated that these names lean more toward boy/girl twins as Taylor was the 24th top baby girl name in 2007 and the 23rd in 2006. On the other hand, when it concerns boy names, Taylor was ranked number 221 in 2006 and 249 in 2007 according to Social Security Administration (SSA) records. Other examples of unisex names that are making an appearance on the top 100 twin baby name chart are Jordan, Morgan, Ashley, Jayden (Jaden) and Mackenzie,

If you are having girls, you are probably curious to know the number one twin girl names. This renowned position for two consecutive years running goes to Ella and Emma – ranked number 4 in 2006 and number 5 in 2007 of the most popular baby names for twins - followed closely by Madison and Morgan. Although Madison is considered a unisex name (as well as Morgan), it is currently most often used for a girl. In 2007, Madison was the 5th most popular girls name in the U.S.

The number one baby names position for boy/girl twins is the highly coveted Taylor and Tyler (possibly if you take into account that the name Taylor is unisex). Other top names for boy/girl twins include Madison/Matthew and Emily/Ethan ranked 22 and 23 of the top twin baby names of 2007.

Twin Baby Name Trends

It is impossible to determine if this is a passing “trend” or a phenomenon that has existed (and will continue to exist) since time began, but parents of twins in the U.S. feel compelled to have the first letter of each baby’s name begin with the same letter of the alphabet.

Of the100 most common baby names for twins in 2007, an astounding 49 had names that began with the same letter or 50% of the top 100. It appears that parents want a vehicle to announce to the world that their two little darlings are twins. What better means than to have their names somehow connected either by beginning with the same letter or sounding similar such as Gabriella and Isabella for example?

For your perusal, here are the top 100 baby names for twins in 2007.
